Tourism Minister launches new hospitality school to
train 1000 Hyatt Hotel staff

An exciting new training initiative that will see 1000 Hyatt Hotel staff in seven locations around Australia receive certification in hospitality has been officially launched in Melbourne by Federal Minister for Tourism, Resources and Energy, the Hon Martin Ferguson MP.

Around 50 hospitality and tourism industry representatives gathered at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne on October 7 for the launch of the Pacific School of Hospitality (PSOH), which offers Hyatt Hotel staff nationwide the opportunity to undertake training in a Certificate III and IV in Hospitality while working in the hotel.

The PSOH has been developed through a joint partnership between Hyatt Hotels Australia award-winning HR and training specialists, Mint Group Australia and the federal and state governments. Already underway in Western Australia at the Hyatt Regency Perth, the PSOH program is focused on service excellence and providing structured career opportunities.

During the launch, Minister Ferguson presented workbooks to several Hyatt employees who will receive training through the program and also discussed the importance of training programs like the PSOH for the future of Australia’s tourism sector.

“The nation’s tourism sector is a significant employer with almost 500,000 people directly and one million people indirectly employed in this area, however it has traditionally been an area of tight labour supply,” Minister Ferguson said.

According to Mint Group director, Tony Fritsche, whose training organisation provides accreditation and certification of the program, this joint initiative will provide continuous learning for staff development and motivation as well as a nationally recognised training qualification.

“Following on from the success we have already started to see from our training program at the Hyatt Regency Perth, The Mint Group is delighted to be bringing this important joint training partnership to Victoria, Queensland, the ACT and New South Wales,” Mr Fritsche said.

”Training in today’s economic climate makes good sense as, while not only will it improve the skills of Hyatt Hotel’s superb staff, the initiative will also see the Hyatt Hotel Group benefit from increased productivity and enhanced service levels..”

The Mint Group is a nationally recognised registered training organisation (RTO) that delivers certified training programs and targeted short courses across a range of industry sectors. Their certified training programs are tailored to meet the exact needs of their clients, such as the Hyatt Hotel Australia.

“Whether you’re after a fully integrated staff training program, or prefer a targeted short course to select employees, we have the skills and professional integrity to make it happen,” Mr Fritsche said.

“A nationally recognised qualification can make all the difference to staff who want to progress their careers and stay in the industry long-term.”
